It is believed that it is one of the holy sites known as Siddha Piths dedicated to the Lord Shiva. It is the most famous temple in the Uttarakhand state. It is said that Tarkasur was a demon who meditated and worship for Lord shiva at the location where temple is situated for blessing and by seeing his devotion lord shiva give him Boon of the eternity as per Tarkasur requests except from the Lord shiva’s son.

Then Tarkasur star being evil by killing  saints and threatening gods. Saints asks help from lord shiva. Lord shiva was disturbed with the doings of Tarkasur , lord shiva marries and Parvati and Kartikeya was born. And then Kartikeya killed Tarkasur but at that time Tarkasur prays to lord shiva and asked to forgive her . Then Mahadev attached his name to the temple where Tarkasur meditated once.
